Compulsory Basic Training - CBT

CBT is the first step towards riding a moped or motorcycle on the road, at the age of 16 for a 49cc moped or 17 for a moped or motorcycle up to 125cc / 11kW power output.

To ride on the road you must first successfully complete your CBT regardless of age or licence entitlement.

The CBT course is not a test it is a training course of elements and modules designed to develop basic safe riding skills in new riders and is normally completed in one day.

All that is required to undertake this course is a driving licence with the necessary provisional entitlement and upon successful completion you are then able to ride the size of machine upon which you completed your CBT.

Your entitlement to ride lasts for a period of 2 years, you must display "L" plates on your machine and you can not carry pillion passengers or ride on the motorway.

If you do not take your DSA test within a 2 year period and pass you will then have to complete another CBT.
